Maar let op: bij dergelijke lokaanbiedingen is voorzichtigheid geboden. Designmeubels behoren namelijk tot de meest nagemaakte productgroepen. In dit artikel wordt de Adjustable Table van Classicon nader bekeken en wordt uitgelegd hoe je het origineel van een namaakproduct kunt onderscheiden .
Origineel versus plagiaat
Maar hoe weet je of het om een origineel of om een namaak gaat? Er zijn enkele algemene factoren waar je op moet letten als je een designmeubel wilt kopen.

Wees waakzaam op het internet
Let op: plagiaatalarm
Ook de inferieure kwaliteit van het frame is duidelijk zichtbaar, want bij de namaak is dit gemaakt van warmgetrokken stalen buis, waarvan het onregelmatige oppervlak bij nadere beschouwing opvalt. De slordige uitstraling wordt nog versterkt door dikke lasnaden en verbindingen. De originele Adjustable Table blinkt daarentegen uit met een spiegelglad verchroomd oppervlak – dankzij de koudgewalste, stabiele stalen buis.
In hoogte verstelbaar middengedeelte
Zelfs voor het ongetrainde oog is hier te zien dat ons voorbeeld een namaakproduct is: het massieve, verchroomde messingelement van het origineel staat in schril contrast met een goedkope gelaste constructie bij de namaak. Aangezien dit element de stabiliteit van de tafel waarborgt, is de replica vanwege de slechte materiaalkwaliteit en de gebrekkige afwerking wankel en instabiel. Ook de kettingoplossing is op het eerste gezicht herkenbaar als een slecht uitgevoerde replica .
Original Adjustable Table E 1027
The Adjustable Table is one of designer Eileen Gray’s most famous designs. ClassiCon is the only manufacturer to hold a valid licence to produce this iconic side table. ClassiCon pays tribute to the historical significance of the Bauhaus table, designed in 1927, by manufacturing it in accordance with Eileen Gray’s original design. A trained eye can easily spot a cheap copy.
At first glance
As counterfeits usually use inferior materials, the copy often weighs less than the original – in our case, the difference is a full 2 kg. At ClassiCon, every Adjustable Table also features a sequential serial number, Eileen Gray’s signature and the ClassiCon logo. These features are present in the form of a carefully executed engraving on the metal frame – an effort that counterfeiters rarely go to.
Table top area
The tabletop of the original Adjustable Table is made of high-quality crystal glass, into which a hole has been milled for the height-adjustable handle. In addition, the original glass top features a transparent sticker bearing the ClassiCon company logo and lettering. In the case of the counterfeit, not only is the glass thinner, but also the milling is poorly executed and covered with an unsightly plastic ring.

Base
Finally, let’s take a look at the base. Here, the poor quality of the steel tubing in the counterfeit version becomes clear once again: the table base is unevenly shaped, so it does not rest properly on the floor, causing the table to wobble despite the glides fitted for this purpose.
